How to Set Goals That Stick

Writer: Dane BoyleDane Boyle

If you have ever set goals before but failed to achieve them, it may have been because you did not create a specific plan of action to accomplish those goals.

Taking the time to set goals is only part of the process of goal setting, and many people often overlook the other part—creating a plan!

Without a plan, your goals remain incomplete. It’s like having a destination but without a map. Your goals tell you where you want to go in life, and your plan tells you how to get there.

Why a Goal Plan Matters

A goal plan is simply a list of scheduled activities that you will do sometime in the future. These may include activities done over a series of days, weeks, months, or even years, depending on the type of goal you set for yourself.

Your plan does not have to be completed perfectly the first time. Usually, your first attempt at creating a goal plan will be vague and incomplete. Don’t worry—this is okay! Plans should be flexible and are likely to be updated as you move toward completing your primary goal.

SMARTER Goal Setting

One of the best ways to create an effective goal plan is by using the SMARTER framework:

  1. S - Specific: Define your goal clearly.

  2. M - Measurable: Set criteria for measuring progress.

  3. A - Achievable: Ensure it is realistic.

  4. R - Relevant: Ensure the goal aligns with your broader objectives.

  5. T - Time-bound: Set a deadline for achievement.

  6. E - Enthusiastic: Choose goals that excite and motivate you.

  7. R - Realistic: Ensure the goal is practical and attainable given your current circumstances.

Think of it like baking a cake. Your ultimate goal is to make a cake (and eat it!), but the ingredients and the things you do with those ingredients are your plan. Once you complete the plan, you complete your goal.

The Power of Visualization

In addition to your goal plan, it is also beneficial to use visualization to help clarify in your mind exactly what you want to achieve. This can involve thinking about your goals and imagining them as completed before you go to bed. Spending even 10 minutes visualizing your success can make a significant difference in achieving your goals. Visualization helps program your subconscious mind, increasing the likelihood of success.

Now it's your turn! Take a moment to write down one goal you have and outline the steps you need to take to achieve it. What action will you commit to today to bring you closer to your goal? Share your plan in the comments or take the first step right now!
